Jonah Mooton

Fire & Blood

Jonah Mooton was heir to Maidenpool and a favorite companion of Princess Saera Targaryen during her adolescence. His participation in a prank at the Blue Pearl brought him before King Jaehaerys, helping expose Saera’s part in the affair and placing his future in the king’s hands. He was subsequently married to Perianne Moore, and the match proved successful: in time, the two became lord and lady of Maidenpool.

Identity and Place at Court

At fifteen, Saera gathered a circle of young men and women around her. Jonah, heir to Maidenpool, was one of three leading male favorites, alongside Red Roy Connington and Braxton Beesbury. Perianne Moore and Alys Turnberry were her closest female companions. For more than a year, the six were regularly together at feasts and balls, went hunting and hawking, and once sailed across Blackwater Bay to Dragonstone. When the young men rode at rings or crossed swords in the yards, the three women watched and cheered them on.

Jonah’s position as an heir made him one of the promising marriage prospects King Jaehaerys saw close at hand for his daughter. The king was pleased that Saera’s future match might be found among the young men already at court. Queen Alysanne, by contrast, regarded Jonah and Red Roy as callow, and warned that Saera’s companions were not necessarily as sensible as their prospects suggested.

The Blue Pearl Affair

In the spring of 84 AC, a prank devised by Saera drew Jonah and his companions into a public scandal. Two members of the City Watch responded to disturbances at the Blue Pearl, where Tom Turnip was the target of a humiliating joke. Jonah, Red Roy, and Braxton were among the drunken patrons. Red Roy acknowledged that they had thought the spectacle amusing; Jonah then identified the prank as Saera’s idea, describing her as a funny girl.

The watchmen escorted Tom back to the Red Keep and brought the three young men before their commander, Ser Robert Redwyne, who delivered them to the king. When Jaehaerys questioned them, they admitted taking Tom to the brothel but initially avoided speaking about Saera. Jonah blushed and claimed the watchmen had misunderstood what he had said. The king ordered the three confined in the dungeons overnight, expecting that they might give a different account in the morning.

Marriage and Later Life

Queen Alysanne’s questioning of Perianne and Alys brought the young women’s knowledge of the affair into the investigation. After the scandal, the king arranged marriages for Saera’s companions. Perianne, who was not pregnant, was married to Jonah; Jaehaerys framed the match as a way for Jonah to help repair the harm in which he had participated. The marriage proved successful, and Jonah and Perianne eventually became the lord and lady of Maidenpool in the Riverlands.

Narrative Role

Jonah’s part in the affair is limited but consequential. His casual disclosure of Saera’s authorship turned a prank among the young court circle into a matter the king could no longer treat as harmless mischief. His subsequent marriage to Perianne also shows how the royal response extended beyond punishment: the king used marriage to assign responsibility and shape the futures of those drawn into Saera’s scandal.
